The West Point SCUBA Club Dives with Special Force Group

Categories: Cadet News, Clubs

The USMA SCUBA Team had the opportunity to visit the 7th Special Force Group(A) at Eglin AFB on March 27-30 for an in-depth look at their daily operations.

The trip began with a briefing on 7th SFG(A)’s equipment and areas of responsibility, followed by a Q&A with NCOs from a Commander’s In-extremis Force (CIF) team of former Combat Divers. This session provided the cadets with valuable insight into the Special Forces selection process, as well as life as a Combat Diver, and how their SCUBA training can translate to a military career.

Cadets then traveled to Vortex Springs, Florida, where they explored its unique cave system. This experience reinforced the vital role of safety in diving, strengthened USMA’s connections with partner agencies, and deepened the cadets’ understanding of the global network of certified divers. The event exemplified one of the Lines of Effort of Superintendent LTG Steve Gilland ’90: “Educate, Train, Inspire,” by applying SCUBA skills in real-world, high-demand environments. It also highlighted the broader significance of SCUBA beyond recreation by preparing cadets for careers of professional excellence and service.
