COL (R) Howard “Scot” Arey did not set out to join the United States Military Academy at West Point, but with sometimes not-so-gentle encouragement from his parents, he arrived at the historic campus along the Hudson River after graduating high school in 1984 and began what turned out to be a 25-year career in the military.
Arey remembers those early days as a West Point cadet:
“My mom was an Army brat, and my dad was enlisted in the Navy,” the Harker Heights resident said. “They met when my dad was stationed down in Florida, and I think it was my mom who did most of the nudging and encouraging. Both parents, really, and I’m so glad they did because the Army career was one of the best things ever to happen to me.
