Team of West Point Cadets Take 3rd Place
CPT Matt Cushing ’17 and teammate Joseph Palazini recently won this year’s 17th Lt. Gen. Robert B. Flowers Best Sapper Competition, making history not only as the first team to win the competition twice, but also back-to-back.
The 50 team-competition tests and challenges service members’ knowledge, physical prowess, and mental fortitude. Teams will face a series of obstacles requiring specific combat engineering skills including steel cutting, mountaineering, a wire obstacle breach, marksmanship, timber cutting, bridge reconnaissance, handheld mine detecting and a Bangalore breach.
Cushing and Palazini are from 21st Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd BCT, 101St Airborne Division at Fort Campbell.
West Point Cadets Samuel Dickerson ’25 and Isaiah McNeilly ’25 took third place in the competition.
