Rubio ’98 and McClain ’02 Named to Artemis Team

LTC Frank Rubio ’98 and LTC Anne McClain ’02 are two of the 18 astronauts NASA selected from its corps to form the Artemis Team and help pave the way for the next astronaut missions on and around the moon as part of the Artemis program. Vice President Mike Pence introduced the members of the Artemis Team Wednesday during the eighth National Space Council meeting at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. “I give you the heroes who will carry us to the moon and beyond—the Artemis Generation,” he said. “It is amazing to think that the next man and first woman on the moon are among the names that we just read. The Artemis Team astronauts are the future of American space exploration—and that future is bright.” Full story.

Brady ’97 in the Fight Against COVID-19

  Scott Brady ’97

In 2017, Scott Brady ’97 founded a start-up in molecular diagnostics focused on infectious diseases. With the accuracy and speed of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, Wise Diagnostic Systems, Brady’s company, sought to provide clinicians and their patients with faster turnaround and better results compared to traditional cultures. When the pandemic created a surging demand for COVID-19 PCR diagnostic testing, it just made sense for the company to get involved as part of the healthcare system’s frontline effort. Wise Diagnostic Systems has tested more than 20,000 COVID-19 specimens since August. Read more.

Riley Family Claims 1000th Victory with Army Hockey

Riley Family Claims 1000th Victory with Army Hockey

On January 10, Army West Point hockey defeated American International College, 5-3, in what was a historic night for the program. The victory was the 1,000th win for the Riley family at the helm of the Army hockey program. The Riley era of Army hockey started in 1950, when a 30-year-old John Patrick “Jack” Riley was named the 14th head coach in program history. Thirty-six seasons and 542 victories later, he handed the keys to the program off to his son Rob, who guided the Black Knights to 257 victories over 18 seasons. The two remain the winningest father-son duo in college hockey history. Brian Riley, the youngest son of Jack, was named head coach of the Black Knights in 2004 and has led the cadets to 201 victories over the course of his 16-year tenure. Full story.

Army WBB Featured in Historic Matchup

Army WBB Featured in Historic Matchup

This past weekend, the Army women’s basketball team, led by head coach Dave Magarity, squared off twice against College of the Holy Cross, coached by his daughter, Maureen Magarity, in what is believed to be the first time in Division-I history a father and daughter faced each other in the sport as head coaches. Both described the event as “surreal.” Dave and Maureen have a long basketball history together. He coached her at Marist College, and she served as his top assistant at Army for four years before she left to take the head coaching position at the University of New Hampshire in 2010. She is in her inaugural campaign with Holy Cross. Full story.
