William D. Mounger ’48 West Point Writing Center Dedicated

 
   

The William D. Mounger ’48 West Point Writing Center in Jefferson Hall was formally dedicated on October 26. The Mounger Writing Center (MWC) provides support for all Cadets working on writing and communications projects for any academic course, personal interest, or professional opportunities. The services of the MWC are designed to help all writers express themselves more clearly, forcefully, and effectively. The Academy has renamed the center in recognition of Mr. Mounger’s enduring commitment to Cadet education, specifically his significant support to the Department of English and Philosophy.  Learn more about how you can support Academy Funding Needs.

West Point Societies Boost Outstanding Away Game Spirit

 
   

Each year, local West Point Societies around the U.S. host pregame events at the away football games. This past weekend, the WPS of the Piedmont provided all the pregame fun for Army fans before the team beat Wake Forest. Between the Benny Havens Hour on Friday and a huge tailgate on Saturday, more than 1,200 fans were near with song and cheer to lead Army on to victory! Photos.

The Fall 2016 issue of West Point magazine is out of this world! From Cold War era missions to working in today’s international teams aboard the ISS, USMA graduate astronauts’ training has prepared them to succeed. Three West Point grads-Kopra ’85, Williams ’80, and Kimbrough ’89-have commanded the ISS during 2016.  Read more about West Point and America’s Space Program. Glee Club at Premier of Smithsonian Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit

On September 23, the West Point Glee Club performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC for a ceremony opening the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture. In the audience that evening were the President and First Lady, Chief Justice John Roberts, GEN (R) Colin Powell, and “countless other titans of culture and the arts.” Tom Hanks narrated the portion in which the Glee Club sang “America the Beautiful” to honor the Tuskegee Airmen. Cadets represented the Academy, interacting with surviving airmen, GEN (R) Powell, Hanks, and other artists, as well as giving a TV interview. ABC will broadcast “Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America” nationwide in February 2017.

During the Army vs North Texas football game on Oct. 22, Kim Vander Yacht P’17, Dan Wilsford P’18, Mark Nunn P’19 and Wendy Warns P’20 represented West Point Parents in presenting a check for $2,400,000 to Todd Browne ’85, President and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, and LTG Robert Caslen Jr. ’75, 59th Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy. This outstanding gift from the West Point Parents Fund will support Margin of Excellence programs which allow all cadets to reach their highest potential. Additionally, the West Point Parents Club of Greater Houston presented a check for $2,000 to WPAOG to support Cadet Activities. Thank you to all our parents and families for their tremendous support!

On Oct. 30, FOX Sports Florida debuted an all-new episode of "Inside the Panthers" covering a “history making preseason trip to the United States Military Academy” by the Florida Panthers. The Panthers have several graduates leading the franchise: Owner Vincent Viola ’77, Team President and CEO Matt Caldwell ’02, Chief of Staff Sean McCaffrey ’04 and Assistant General Manager Eric Joyce ’02. “All of them are featured in the episode, where they provide an added level of insight that is equal parts nostalgia and business, as the organization came together for a hockey game and to show their appreciation for everyone in the West Point community.”
