Army West Point Women’s Rugby kicked off its 7s season on March 29 at Harvard’s Crimson 7s tournament. Both of the Black Knights’ squads put up dominant performances in Cambridge to open their 2025 7s seasons.
Army’s Team Black and Team Gold both had perfect records in pool play and handily dispatched their opponents in their respective championship matches to earn the outright Crimson 7s Champions and Open Division Plate Champions titles. Overall, Army outscored its opponents 150-10 on March 29, a demonstrative defensive performance from both squads.
Team Black
Army’s Team Black kicked off their day in Cambridge with a 17-0 win against Sacred Heart University. CDT Chloe de Leon ’28 put up two tries for the squad, with CDT Alyssa Davis ’26 adding another. CDT Alissa Eisenhart ’26 added two completed conversions to the tally to secure Team Black’s first win of the day.
Team Black next took on Brown, and the squad earned its second shutout victory of the day with a 34-0 win over the Bears. Five different Black Knights recorded tries in the contest as CDTs Yesenia Morales ’27, Gabby Woenker ’28, Winter Favre ’25, Natalia Johnson ’27, and Chloe de Leon all found their way onto the scoresheet with two tries for Woenker. Eisenhart and de Leon both made good on a conversion attempt to complete Army’s second win of the day.
In the squad’s final game of pool play, Team Black sent tournament host Harvard packing with a 24-0 win off of two tries from CDT Cassidy Ball ’28, a try for Davis, a try for de Leon, and a conversion for Eisenhart. Ball led off the scoring for Army in their final pool play match of the day with an impressive try on the edge of the try zone.
With their perfect record in pool play, Team Black earned a spot in the tournament championship match where they faced Trinity Western. CDT Taimane Fiatoa ’28 and de Leon added tries early in the game to have Army ahead 10-0 at halftime. CDT Cecile Ollis ’26 and Yesenia Morales each put tries on the board along with a conversion from Eisenhart to secure Army’s 22-10 win over Trinity Western and claim the Crimson 7s Tournament Champions title.
Team Gold
Army’s Team Gold opened its day in Cambridge with a 20-0 win over Bowdoin. CDT Emily Steen ’27 and Emily Vizcarra ’27 each put up tries in the first half followed by tries from CDTs Gwynn Campos ’25 and Ellie Kearney ’26 in the second half of the match to secure Team Gold’s first win of the day.
The squad then took on Northeastern and continued Army’s defensive showcase with a 14-0 win over the Huskies. CDT Zainab Ogunlola ’28 and Emily Steen recorded Army’s two tries in the match with Emily Vizcarra adding a conversion to her tally for the day and securing Army’s second win.
Team Gold then faced Harvard B and demonstrated their resilience with a 19-12 win against the Crimson to claim the Open Division title. CDT Katelyn Woenker ’26 recorded two tries with a good conversion from Vizcarra to give Army the 12-5 lead at the half that Team Gold extended with a try from Steen and another good conversion from Vizcarra to secure the victory.
After LIU’s opponent pulled out of the seventh place final, Team Gold stepped in to play the Sharks in a friendly match. The Black Knights went 10-15 behind tries from CDT Tatiana Stockbower ’28 and Emily Steen.
Army will hit the road once again to compete in the Chargers 7s tournament hosted by New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut on April 6.
