Rhodes Takes Home AAC Special Teams Weekly Honor

The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly football honors from week two of the 2024 season. Army Punter/Holder CDT Matthew Rhodes ’25 has been named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Rhodes, a senior from Auburn, Alabama made a key fourth-quarter special teams play to help secure Army’s 24-7 win at Florida Atlantic as the Black Knights extended their winning streak to six games and took their first conference game as a member of The American. Serving as the holder on Army’s field goal unit, Rhodes took a fourth-down snap and raced down the left sideline for a 23-yard touchdown, giving the Black Knights a 17-point lead.

Also receiving conference recognition was slot back CDT Noah Short ’26 who was named a weekly honorable mention. The slot back had a career-best 160 yards on 11 carries (14.5 avg.), including a 49-yarder in the first quarter to set the tone. Short is the first non-quarterback to have 160 rushing yards in a game for Army since Larry Dixon ’25 had 188 yards on October 4, 2014, against Ball State in Jeff Monken’s first season. Through two games, Short leads the AAC in rushing yards with 243 on only 19 carries (12.8 avg.), which also ranks 15th most in the entire FBS.
