Visiting West Point
Access to Post: West Point is open to the public between 9am and 5pm daily. Visitors may enter through Thayer or Stony Lonesome gates. (Washington Gate is normally restricted to those with DoD decals and Military ID cards. Washington Gate is physically closed between 10pm and 6am daily.) After 5pm, entrance is allowed for business, for visiting staff, faculty and cadets who live on West Point, and for public events such as concerts and sporting events. Visitors arriving outside the 9am - 5pm window must provide the security guard with a destination and purpose for their visit.
Visitors in vehicles without DoD decals must have a valid US government issued photo ID (state drivers license, US passport, government/military ID) for all adults 16 and over, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
Foreign nationals require a US person to escort them in order to enter the installation. The recommendation is to sign up for a tour from West Point tours (see below).
Limits: Once on post you will have access to most areas except the cadet areas, barracks and the Mess Hall specifically.
Post Tours: The West Point Visitor Center runs guided bus tours of post. Tours are combined bus and walking tours with a guide that depart daily from the Visitors Center with the exception of: Graduation week, The Saturdays of Army home football games, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, and any time at the discretion of Post security. The 1-hour tour makes stops at the Main Cadet Chapel, Trophy Point, Battle Monument and the Plain. You are off the bus walking approximately 30 minutes. They also offer two different 2-hour tours. Both will cover all the stops on the 1-hour tour along with additional points of interest. For more information, visit the West Point Tours webpage.
