MICHIE STADIUM PRESERVATION PROJECT, WEST POINT CHARACTER INITIATIVES

• $500,000 in support of the Michie Stadium Preservation Project: Michie Stadium has been and remains West Point’s key portal to the public. The project will reconstruct the 160,000-square-foot East Stands, built in 1962, modernizing, upgrading, and improving building systems and operations, including broadcasting, ticketing, lighting, winterization, premium and hospitality seating options, concessions and amenities, and stadium accessibility. As per USMA’s 2035 Plan, the Michie Stadium Preservation Project is pivotal as it will relocate and consolidate Army West Point Athletics offices and administrative functions within a centralized footprint, while freeing up much-needed space in Building 639, Athletics’ current home. The released space will be utilized for the Academy’s broader vision for cadet development programs and initiatives. With the 52,800-square-foot office tower, all of Army West Point Athletics administrative offices will now be housed within the footprint of the Michie Complex (Holleder Center, Kimsey Center, and Randall Hall).

$700,000 in support of Character Education Consortium: To build the Academy’s internal expertise, the Simon Center for the Professional Military Ethic (SCPME) will host the Character Education Consortium with faculty volunteers who desire to incorporate best practices for character development within their academic discipline and curriculum. Faculty will be invited to participate in up to five summer training sessions intended to teach faculty how to help develop cadets’ character, especially in their classroom. This important skill enables character development to occur throughout the Academy. Each participating faculty member will be given the opportunity to produce materials they will use in their classroom during the upcoming school year. SCPME will help assessing the effectiveness of faculty materials and implementation strategies. This program could greatly increase the opportunities in character development that are delivered within the academic curriculum, especially for courses that may not appear to directly address character development.

$795,000 in support of the Character Development Seminar: SCPME will build networks of intellectual capital related to character development to ensure that West Point remains at the leading edge of character development and assessment. A critical aspect of building external networks is establishing relationships with the best scholars in the field through an initiative called the Character Development Seminar. These honoraria will be used to host a renowned character development expert or behavioral change expert who will give a lecture to staff, faculty, and cadets aimed at offering practical advice on how to develop one’s character. The scholar will also meet with the SCPME team to brainstorm and discuss best practices for character development and how to integrate those best practices into West Point’s character development effort.
